I'm sure your reasons for posting birthday wishes to Jimmy Carter and Gandhi were as innocent as stated. wink.gif
If I wanted to start a bring-the-house-down political discussion, believe me, it would be more obvious than posting a birthday wish to Mahatma Gandhi.

No doubt you're looking forward to BPJ posting birthday wishes to Reagan in February…
I have no problem with BPJ or anybody else posting birthday wishes to Ronald Reagan, Rush Limbaugh or anybody they choose. Seeing somebody's passionate political leanings is interesting and telling. Your unlocking of the thread is an honest gesture. I appreciate it. (Though now with all of this attention, it might turn out to be pretty mundane. LOL.)

If you want to take about how global warming and lesser snow/glaciers will impact routes or views or whatever me thinks that is legit. I'm genuinely curious for instance about whether certain glacier traverses will have boot beaten trails in a few decades. New Lakes. Changing hiking seasons and maybe more rain or less skiing or whatever effects outdoor activities would be.
I think this posters take on it is ideal. discuss new routes. discuss ice receding. discuss more or less rain and it's effect on hiking. don't discuss reasons or causes as knowns or givens. don't make political assumptions and then expect only yours to stand after you've politicized it by doing so. if a lack of political discussion limits your ability to write what you would otherwise post... then that's a good sign it shouldn't be posted on an apolitical site.

I do not want this thread to degrade, but I am curious as to what the real hot button is here. Is it because some would suggest that the warming is man's doing and some would say it's just a fluctuation? I for the life of me can't see why that is so goddamned controversial. We can all agree on the warmer than before part, right? Lakes are forming, glaciers are receding. This may or may not have been caused by us. A lot of scientists say us, a lot in business say not us. WHAT? confused.gif

for me, sure I agree the earth is warming. i have no problem with that. when you make causal statements beyond warming being shown by melting ice, however, it's another story! personally, to aid in the good faith effort to keep politics out of these threads, I hereby pledge not to mention causal factors... first. Once this suit is played however, a political response is a reasonable answer to a political post. after all, it's not exactly fair to allow one side of political issue to be stated without the other side being allowed to respond.

Okay, but keep in mind that no matter who casts the first stone here, we are all in danger of losing our right to discuss anything remotely related to a warmer planet. I fought for the unlocking of the thread before I went and looked at what happened last time, and I hope I don't live to regret that.

There's a logical progression that any curious person and for that matter that a lot of scientific debate/research on this issue has and will continue to track: #1)Is the Earth warming? [Almost everyone agrees on this now] #2)Does the Earth have cycles of warming/cooling and weather w/o human influence? [Again, almost everyone agree yes] #3)Even if the Earth can change on its own, can human impact also alter these cycles? [Probably most people would say the answer is yes in a theoretical sense. Of course what matters is what is going on in reality not theory so the better question is...] #4)If human action are altering the climate is it to an extent that actually matters? [This is probably where people and interest groups diverge] #5)If human actions are altering the climate in significant ways then should we do something to limit those actions and if so what? The problem is that this discussion is pretty much on question #4 in most circles and if you suppose that the answer to question #4 is Yes then you have to at least consider #5. And #5 is a whole messy can o worms wherein you get into things like EPA studies that were altered by politicos, Kyoto, CAFE, govt regulation, fossil fuels, oil dependence etc. etc. And maybe a thread on global warming won't become that. But in fact someone already broaching this issue:
Quote:
Whether or not we'll do anything about [human activity] that [is accelerating such a warming trend or perpetuating an unnatural warming trend] is the question.
And that's where you are likely to see a turn towards political considerations. Of course it is possible to find civil discussions on politics. Or so I've heard. wink.gif So maybe such a discussion really can be had in earnest but I'm putting 2-1 odds on a padlock carrying the day in due time.

The rules are pretty simple. No threats, no personal attacks, no generally objectionable posts (foul language, racial slurs, pornography, etc.), and no politics unless hiking related (and then only in the Stewardship forum).
