Hardware firewalls may be overkill, but they're another layer of protection and not all that expensive, really. I'm not talking about high-end equipment doing stateful inspection of every network packet coming through, but something simple like a Linksys BEFSR41 that can do NAT and have minimal ports open to prying eyes.

Pop-up Stopper is great, imo. If you wanna open a new window, hold down Control while clicking the link.
I think I've found something much more user friendly than pop-up stopper. It's called "free surfer" and it's smart enough to allow links to open up in a new window. Better yet, you don't even see the unrequested pop up windows before they get killed.
