Levi Scott is buried in the Agency Valley Cemetery, Malheur County, Oregon. Malheur means "bad hour". The Agency Valley Cemetery is north of Beulah Reservoir, 15 miles north of Juntura (about 75 miles east and north of Vale) This cemetery started in 1883, is 1/4 of an acre, and contains among others, Levi Scott of Applegate Trail fame. Scott's sons are also in the cemetery. The cemetery is overgrown with sage. It sits in a beautiful place up on a knoll overlooking the Agency Valley. Nearest motel is in Burns (70 miles west on Hwy-20).

Fabulous stuff, folks. Mike I especially like "Palouse." I don't think I'd mind being planted amongst some sagebrush. Or to listen to the sound of the ocean perpetually like the folks planted at Oysterville and Long Beach. Interesting read, ski. I love this kind of stuff. up.gif It's nice that after folks die, people still pay attention to 'em, even if it's to admire their headstone. The photo I took of Ed Loomis' stone showcases the love folks had for him. I remember telling him, as I took the photo, "you made out like a bandit, dude." Ole Ed Loomis has an gorgeous stone. smile.gif

I went to the Pioneer Cemetery at Coulee City yesterday. It's unkept, and choked with grass, greasewood and sagebrush. Looks like there are about a dozen stones; there may be more interred under the weeds, but I didn't discover the cemetery til late in the afternoon & didn't spend a lot of time. I noted the name McEntee on the obelisk; it's the name of a street in Coulee City; apparently a forefather. Strange the town let's the burial site grow weedy. Maybe the guy was a jerk or sumpin'. Most of the stones were children, one who lived exactly one year. It's plaintive to see progress in the background of a cemetery. Time stopped for them, but behind them is traffic on US 2, modern silos, power lines. The sandstone markers are as clear as the day they were cut. They're placed facing away from the wind. Several were intricately carved. I got a nice shot of a lamb from one child's stone - the stone is over a hundred years old and you can still see the carved eyeball on the lamb's face. I was surprised to see stones so old there. I didn't know anyone lived in the area that long ago. I wondered who they were, what they did, what they thought of their lives in that then starve-acre place. I thought of Tess Durbeyfield in Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urberville's as she pounded on a family vault and lameneted, "why am I on the wrong side of this stone!" I wonder how often women back then in Coulee City murmured those words.

I've got some film shots of http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Cambridgeshire/MadingleyUSACemetery.html Madingley in Cambidgeshire, UK. I was Sideboy/Honor Guard for 50 V-E day ceremony. Here's a couple digital shots from Victoria BC.

Nice photos banzaimf! What a beautiful statue, and I love the reflection of the tree on the stone.

Redmond Cemetery - It's pretty close to my office and sometimes I take a good walk at lunchtime with my camera, pickup a latte at Freddy's or Mercury's, and enjoy a little outside time to break up the work day. The gravestones speak volumes leaving more questions. Some so young.
