Does anyone have a routine for treating the hot spots, so they don't turn into anything worse?
I loaned my liner socks to my friend today as she couldn't find her hiking socks and for the first time in ages I've got some bad hot spots (no blisters yet).

That is whacked. But I've got some nice clear duct tape in my pack or does it have to be industrial gray?

When you put it on...don't skimp. wrap your entire heal all the way to mid foot, not just a wittle piece. And yes it has to be grey ....

Yup, duct tape. And don't be stingy about it. As much as possible, keep the wrinkles out of it by sort of making darts and cutting away the excess when you apply it.
I prefer the camo duct tape myself, but I think the clear and grey work just as well.

Agree. It's the only thing that'll work. I've never been a fan of the new-fangled color duct tape, thinking it inferior, but was forced to use red duct tape last weekend, and was surprised that it worked as well as the silver. So there ya go.

My mom has the red duct tape too. She thinks she's somehow more hip using red. I've got the ol' gray standby. Works like a charm. Put it on before you hike in areas you know you get hotspots in, and you're good for at least a couple of days!

I have been using athletic tape for taping my heels for a few years now and it works good for me. Usually it will even stay on on multiple day backpacks.

Actually, my heels were fine, the hot spots were at the base and under my big toes. I've just been using heavy duty foot creme today and things seem to be getting better. And now I've got extra socks in my car for future emergencies.

Ok, I have to amend my former advice a bit. Duct tape works best for heels and the bottom of your feet. Athletic tape works best for toes because it's more flexible and stretchy.

Ditto...I assumed the heal...that is the only place I have ever had blisters.
maybe those are from descending. Tighten your boots over the top of your foot before descending the will help with the friction when descending.

Bump. I was looking for blister advice and this thread is perfect so I thought it deserved a bump.
My son's been getting blisters (in the cheap Ozark Trail boots I bought him ) and Band-Aids were working OK, but they fall off after a while, so I'll try the duct tape (or 1st-aid tape) as everyone is suggesting.
(I've never had blisters in my Vasque Sundowners.)

I use the double band aid approach.... one ontop of the other. You do have to understand the dynamics of the rub so that the one on top moves with the rub so to speak. & carry extras so you can replace as needed. But if you let the bandaids take the rub, you shouldn't need to replace to often. Works on the heel, toe, bottom of foot etc.

If I know Im going to be putting on some miles, and Im not positive (I am about my Limmer Ultralights) about my boots I put on some Body Glide. It works great helping to prevent the hot spot from starting.
