Tonight and for the next 4-6 weeks, 5 planets will be visible about 45 minutes after sunset. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter and the moon will all line up in a fairly straight line and equally spaced. It supposed to happen in the western sky. And the news story said that they will all be bright enough to see inside the city limits. Apparently, this only happens once every 35+ years.

Probably both. Mercury never sets more than about 90 minutes after the sun does, so if you want to see all five you need to be on station and looking as soon as the sky begins to darken.
You need a spot with a good view of the low western horizon, Mercury will be no more than a hand at arms length distance above the horizon and can be very tricky to spot. Venus will be up for a while longer, Saturn and Jupiter at least 3-4 hours, I don't remember where Mars is right now.

The fine folks at CNN said that they would be visible starting 45 minutes after sunset. I'm guessing that 45 minutes is just to allow the sky to sufficiently darken. They didn't say how long the show would last though...
It's pretty safe to say that if we take all of man kinds accumulated knowledge, we still don't know everything. So, I hope you understand why I don't believe you know everything. But then again, maybe you do.
