PS: Building cairns is illegal. hi all, can someone explain why? is this because it disturbs smaller animals' habitat? are there dangers associated with cairn building (aside from those associated with too much dipping into the Yukon flask dizzy.gif ) are rangers worried about some of the artifacts rolling off and hurting hikers / climbers below?
I can see as how some in authority could view cairn building as the antithesis of the natural processes of weathering and erosion. This is silly, imho, because of the natural process of geologic uplift counteracting weathering and erosion in a continuous cycle that humans have no hand in altering, in a geological perspective. "No permanant structures" is a ridiculous notion when all natural processes are considered.

There was an even bigger one on top of Blum, but someone knocked it down! We was up thar on Thursday and found it missing. Definitely was there in '02. Frankly I don't see why climbers have to build a cairn on summits -- is it ego to prove someone has been there?
I always thought that it's tradition. After you reach the summit, you place another stone to add to the art.../shrug

I can't find the picture I took of it but we found a really cool Tibetan looking one at the Diablo Lake Overlook earlier this summer. It was probably 4' tall but very well designed. I love cairns but ducks are lame.

Perhaps I missed a post about this one...but the cairn on Alta (which wasn't there last year) is humongous!

This 8 footer is found on Elkhorn Peak in Idaho. It was built in 1878 by Henry Gannett and Allen D. Wilson and still stands today (info from Tom Lopez's book on Idaho Climbing)

OK, I am REALLY confused then. Seems like discouraging and kicking over cairns is pushed Big Time on this forum. When does it go from "putting it back to pristine nature" to "vandalism"? Just curious..... I need some CONSISTENT rules.....
