Was reading a trail report on wta on Mt. Ellinor. It sounds like the summit has great views. Do you really need crampons in the winter? Is there avalanche potential? Is it a recommended winter hike at all? Let me know your thoughts if you've done it!

pbear, Have done Ellinor twice in early spring - winterlike conditions though. One time there was a "cowpath" in soft snow right up the moderate gully. Easy. Other time the snow was quite hard and required kicking steps - crampons would have been nice. The answer to your questions, for both crampons and avalanche danger is that it depends on the conditions. I wouldn't characterize Ellinor as a "hike" in winter, but a snow scramble. Views are nice.
