Anyone perc their coffee while out hiking? I picked up a small 6 cup aluminum perculator at the flea mart in Packwood thinking I might try it. That instant stuff just ain't the same.

If I am not using starbucks VIA, I will bring along a small strainer, bring water to boil in the pot, remove from heat, throw in grounds, steep for 5 minutes, then pour through strainer into cup, works great! I have also seen people (barefootjake) use the french press for the jetboil which is kinda cool, but for me the less additional weight I have to bring the better. A cool trick to minimize your trash weight is to dry the grounds out in the pan afterwards. Happy cup o joe!

We always used to take a percolator on car camping trips and it was the main way to make coffee on the stove in our trailer until I bought a Coleman drip coffee maker (which, works great, but is not something you take hiking). The percolated coffee always tasted fine to me. I imagine it would work well on a backpacking or day hiking trip.

Percolation is exactly what should never be done to coffee. frown.gif The coffee is re-boiled and re-heated again and again as it percolates. Some people like that burned coffee flavor, maybe it's what they grew up with, but I can't stand it. I like Via, it's the lightest and easiest, but not the best. Better is drip coffee, but heavier and more work. Best is the backpacker's espresso maker I got at REI for $12. It makes two-plus shots of excellent espresso, and weighs just six ounces. On a week-long backpacking trip, the weight savings in coffee pays for the extra weight of the espresso maker, compared to a small plastic Melita cone with filters, because the espresso maker makes the most efficient use of the ground coffee. I mix in a little hot water to make an "Americano". biggrin.gif

Your thing is almost exactly like my thing. The only difference appears to be that my "upper chamber" is a separate cup that the espresso ends up in, via a bent-over tube, while yours has the upper cup built in. Sweet. up.gif

$30.00 + shipping! I paid $3.00 for the perculator! I wish I wasn't such a tighta$$! I never really liked expresso, but maybe I'll have to try one of these new fangled thingies. Thanks

old design called a moka pot. very common in europe and made by many different companies. the gsi one is a stripped-down version. not really a percolator but also not a true espresso maker... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moka_pot

Yep. I use the Starbucks Via - really is the ultimate solution for backpacking coffee. I mix it stronger than the instructions say: I use two packets in my 12 oz cup and it's the next best thing to brewed coffee. But if I'm brewing it, what mike said.

I heard the trick to getting the grounds to sink is to drop a dollop of cold water in right before you pour it into a cup. I recall it working when someone made cowboy coffee for me; but then again, that was over a ago - maybe I'm recalling saying it worked because I was being polite. Does it work? I'll hafta get an old aluminum pot & perk it for car camping trips and short backpacks. Used to drink perk'd coffee when on car camping trips with my folks. up.gif

Starbucks Via is cowboy coffee? embarassedlaugh.gif (yes, I know, that's not quite what you meant) It always cracks me up when someone acts like drinking weak or bad coffee is manly, but drinking strong or good coffee is "girlie". Like the beer drinkers who drink tasteless swill with almost no alcohol sneering at "girlie men" drinking microbrews, even though the micros have more flavor and more alcohol.
