The 1941 Olympic National Forest Recreation Guide #24 map has been posted - link, courtesy of Olympic NP Archivist Gay Hunter. For full detail, press the "magnifying glass" icon to enlarge, or select "Action" "Download" (1.7 MB jpg). Edit: This photocopy in the ONP archives is incorrectly dated 1941. An original in the National Archives bears the correct publication date: Nov. 23, 1937, revised May 1938. Drawn only 3 years after Olympic National Park was created, and 10 years after the Olympic Highway 101 was completed, it shows the Olympic recreational trail system when it was near its peak extent. The entire loop trail around the perimeter of Olympic NF is shown, including the Snyder-Jackson trail and its extensions to the Queets, Quinault, Wynoochee and Skokomish. The full network of Guard Stations and shelters is also shown at its peak (including six shelters not found on any other map I've seen, and added to the shelter list). This map is a good companion to Taplin's 1932 "Olympic Trail Guide", generously posted last year by Mace. Afficianados of Olympic trail history will enjoy both!

That's spectacular, thanks for posting. I was drawn to the southern Olympics where you see the trails marked both east-west and north-south. Humptulips, Wynoochee, Satsop, looonng trails and joined together. Must have been amazing old woods way back when. Although, logging of those valleys, Wynoochee at least, had progressed pretty far by the early 20th century, as I recall. By 1940 would be even farther along. Maybe the map doesnt reflect the roads and train tracks that were there.
