Jacob, Josh, Michael and I climbed Independence Peak today on the Mountain Loop Highway. We hiked to the pass between Independence Lake and North Lake and then turned south off-trail to reach the west ridge of the peak. What we were immediately faced with looked too hard so we traversed several yards to the south until we reached two gullies leading up the peak. We scrambled up moss and choss in the second gully until we could go no further. We roped up and climbed 20 feet of 5.6 on the rib, left of the gully. Jacob Smith led. Above that, we scrambled the remainder of the west ridge with a combination of simul-climbing, easy scrambling unroped, and unprotected class 4 with extreme exposure. The top of the ridge was just as narrow as the map indicates and the knife edge sections got my pulse up. There were two registers, a standard Fay Pullen type and a smaller one in a film canister dating back to 1981. Apparently not many people climb this peak because we were the first party to sign it in two years.

Really cool trip. I walked over to North Lake once with non-climbers. Took a look up that side and thought, nope, too hard to scramble. Although based on the register several have done it sans ropes. Thanks for the register photos - I always enjoy them from peaks like this with few climbs.

Nice! One of my favorite peaks on the Loop. Your tr is good motivation to head back up there.

Guess we didn't find the register in November, 2011...oops! http://www.flickr.com/photos/32121172@N00/sets/72157628128640916/

I'm not always sure I like being older but being less stupid has advantages. http://www.flickr.com/photos/32121172@N00/sets/

Nice! Your pictures really capture the exposure and fun climbing on the West ridge! up.gif I'm surprised it doesn't get done more often. The climbing is a lot of fun and the peak is very accessible. Definitely one of the MLH's best.
