I just came across a couple of old photos I took of the Pilchuck ski area in 1969. I had shutter problems with my old camera when it got cold & that resulted in a dark area on the right. This is the main base area, about 100 feet above the existing parking lot. The A-frame building is now down near the Mountain Loop highway and is a rental cabin on the river.

Thanks Schroder. It looks like they had plenty of coverage that year.
I skiied there once but I am not sure what year. It could have been in 1969.

Not at all. Sorry for the poor quality.

I just dug up the photos from my first hike up Pilchuck in 1986, about 8 years after it closed. I thought it was interesting because it's almost the same view as the one you posted above.

It was a small but quite fun and challenging ski area. At one point the lift spanned a chasm and you rode the chairs without safety bars some 150' above the chasm.
It was such a low ski area that we used to figure there had to be rain and snow mixed in Seattle for good powder snow at Mt. Pilchuck. Still, I skied some good powder there. It's heyday was during a cold period locally. When poorer years came it really didn't get enough snow.

There was a young skier that slipped out of the chair over this chasm and was hanging by his hands. Gary Barrett, who ran the ski school and managed the area, was in a lower chair and went hand-over-hand on the cable to that chair and rescued him.

That had some interesting reading in it, especially the last paragraph describing the runs. I'm not a skier, but that would not make me want to go there!

Speaking of rain as in the article, there was one particular storm (I don't remember the date) while the ski area was operating that dumped 14" of rain in 24 hours at Verlot. Until the storm that dumped 18" in 36 hours at Rainier a few years ago that was the most rain I ever heard of locally. Skiing must have been awesome.

Thanks for the link Schroder.
If the ski area was located in Mt. Pilchuck State Park then why was the forest service involved?
