I remember grabbing chunks my mother had cut for either pie or jam and sucking on them.

Q: what do you do with that pie dough you trim off around the edge?

Just like Mom. Don't recall that she called them cookies though. Not sure she called them anything. Sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Tasty.

I grew up with apple trees and a large rhubarb patch. Mom made the best pies. The apple trees were very old and the best apples were hard and green and sweetly tart. We have never been sure about the type apple.
I miss moms pies and seldom make them myself simply because I get greedy guts and eat it all.
rhubarb in the spring, apple pretty much most of the year thanks to frozen slices and blackberry for Labor Day weekend
and yes, if you peeled the apples you got the left over crust dough to make cinnamon sugar twists.

Just out of curiosity, are you picking all the berries yourself?

although everything seems to be blooming a little early this season, I don't believe I'd find any ripe berries yet.
no... they're all from California or Chile - not as good as our own local berries, but they seem to work in a pinch.

What I meant to ask was, did you pick and freeze? But finding time to pick, let alone make all the pies you do.....

no... I look around to see who's got berries on sale... berries get kind of gooshy when they're frozen (although there are a lot of people who use them that way.)

I was kicking myself the other night. I made a beautiful cherry pie and we ate half of it before I remembered to take pics.
It's almost that time of year again... Picking local cherries at our friend's orchard, eating them until we get sick, then canning the rest - some for pie filling, some in syrup.)

No pie at Amanda Park! Thought I'd get some on the way home but they were closed. Need to verify their hours dang nab it.
