Today I had a Cliff Bar for the first time. giardia.gif hurl.gif They are gross. Who invented them? They taste like a scientific equation. The wrapper looked ok, but you can't judge a book by its cover. If there was a cliff nearby I would have jumped. But others like them, hence this poll...

I don't go on any real super hikes.(Many many days on the trail) but I think more or less they are a gimmick. You really have to be on the trail a long time fore these to come in handy. Otherwise your paying 2 bucks for a gross candy bar. down.gif

I only use them on the trail in need of energy ..so just about anything tastes good then lol.gif There are some I like more than others...but its a trial and error method...I have to try them all to find out which ones I can tolerate.

When would a guy need them? I am young. I admit that, but between 1-5 day hike.... I dont see as where they would come in handy..more than anything else..If you want to go on an extreme hike, then you got something going there. I think there sold more as a gimick than anything else. ***EDIT*** Maybe I should have said "bought" instead of "sold"

The one thing that makes them better than, say, a snickers bar on backpacks is that they won't melt and go all gloppy on you. Of course, even a melted gloppy snickers bar is pretty darned tasty (just messy). Energy bars are always just ok. Except Power Bars - those are always gross.

Blech, hate them all, except for the Krave Bar, which is more like a big candy bar than like an energy bar. Otherwise, double blech!!

Most are pretty bad, but a few kinds are edible. I sometimes eat a "Protein" bar from Costco, in part because of the vitamin and mineral content. The Double Chocolate Crunch flavor is the only one of the four I would actually enjoy eating. The "Tart 'n Tangy, Sweet 'n Savory" nature bars from Trader Joe's are very good. Lots of whole almonds, cranberries, oat flakes, and other assorted goodies like chocolate chips. They also come in vanilla almond and peanut butter, both good but not as good as the "tart...."

Never liked the Clif Bar. A few years ago I puked after being in a rush for work and only having a Clif Bar to eat. I prefer regular ole Natura Valley granola bars or even the Lar 'e' Bar which tastes better than most energy bars.

I have consumed the ones you refer to. Although taste isn't their greatest asset, I will state that I enjoy the combination of their compact size and capability to decently fill me. The sufficient protein is a good way to counterbalance the mass carb consumption during backpacking.

While I consume energy/nature bars on the trail and agree that most of them are surprisingly awful, they are 'edible' and get the job done. With that said, I do think the Nature Valley Chewy Fruit & Nut bars are pretty high on the 'good taste' list... especially the ones with cranberries (and I'm not much of a cranberry fan).

Clif bars are OK for me. Power bar harvest are my favorites, sometimes I have one at work for a snack. I usually bring a couple bars when hiking to supplement whatever else I've brought.

Backpacker Joe Loves PowerBars
Backpacker Joe loves PowerBars - that's all he took for food on one trip.
