When backpacking i eat the freeze dried meals off the shelf from REI, which i find pretty darn tasty. My biggest problem is finding something to go with the main course. What do you guys typically take with you? Any suggestions for a light and tasty side dish? Oh yeah, i dont like to cook, so im looking for something pretty easy. Thanks

TJ, are you thinking side dish as carbs? Or veggies? Or fruity? A lot of the recipes on my website can be halved and the meat left out-to make good sidedishes smile.gif And yes, no cooking needed, just boiling water wink.gif

Btw...I am packing right now for a trip this weekend..and as usual, young Master Ford will be having this favorite of his fer dinner: Cheesy Rice: In a quart freezer put: 1 cup instant rice pinch of salt 2 Tbl dry milk 2 Tbl cheese sauce powder In camp add 1 1/8 cups boiling water to the bag and stir very well. Let sit in a cozy for 5 minutes, then stir well again. Feeds 1 hiker. This is great with some italian bread crumbs on top. This recipe is also one that works well with couscous (also on the site)

anything Sarbar recommends rocks smile.gif One thing I do too, on a single overnighter one can grill and freeze some good meat - like boneless chicken chunks - by the time you hike in, they will be defrosted, and can be added to something nummy like Mountain House Wild Rice up.gif Taking in smoked salmon could be a problem. Despite my odor-proof bag etc etc the smell was all over me, and the tie to my ursack. Thank goodness for no salmon hungry bears lol.gif

Hey Kat..did you know QFC sells a brand of "instant" wild rice? It is actually pretty good-I do it freezer bag style and let it sit for 10 minutes..I usually add like 1/4 cup to the rest white. Good stuff.

Ya know, a guy I work with gave me a mini bottle of that stuff for Xmas (name exchange thingy). He says he drinks one or two after a day hike. I thought it tasted darned good, and helped get rid of the cold spell I get after a hike in the fall/winter. But I haven't bought any.. Not that this has anything to do with side dishes, really! I've heard hauling in a pepper and tomato isn't too bad, I've really got a hankering for fresh veggies on the trail.

Helps cure that high-altitude cough, too! That's been my favortie camp drink for years. Sometimes it's been rumpleman's and hot cocoa. 100 proof: High alcohol to weight ratio, good up.gif

My all-time favorite. Some might not consider it a side-dish, yet it goes well with almost any meal in the backcountry. Hot Cocoa with Peppermint Schnapps Yummy! Very nice on a cool night at the end of a long day of hiking.

Kleet, you may want to try this. It goes well with a lot of dishes. biggrin.gif Even redheads.

It's pretty safe to say that if we take all of man kinds accumulated knowledge, we still don't know everything. So, I hope you understand why I don't believe you know everything. But then again, maybe you do.
