I paid $26 for a single overnight in Nooksack Cirque last September and was thinking it was a amusing that I was paying the same as someone getting a nice full service campsite with bathrooms.
I'd argue that any night spent in a backcountry zone should be less too, seeing as one isn't getting any facilities at all, but that likely complicates the overall system.

Weird. Based on the way the announcement is written you would think there is a huge population of solo backpackers clamoring for cheaper fees. I have a hard time believing that solo travelers make up a significant portion of backcountry users given all the climbing in NCNP. On the other hand all those 6 person backpacking groups now pay $10 a person instead of $26 flat fee.

Solo hiking has an inherently higher risk.
Hiking with others provides a safety net, of sorts.
If there was to be a mandatory insurance policy enacted on hiking activities, which of these factors would command the higher premium?

I've hiked with people who had extremely bad judgement and said "never again" to going into the mountains with them. I've also hiked with an ultra marathoner who was a struggle to keep up with, I was winded the whole time and probably wouldn't make the best decisions if I had to. And then there was the time I hiked with a really slow friend from work and came out at 5 am as a result.
I think it depends on the people, and probably also the trail. Like a snow bridge might be strong enough for one person but collapse under the third.

I let them know at the start that I entertain NO LOYALTIES out there. Out there it's wild and you're on your own. I ain't slowing down or providing help if you can't perform! Same as the gas station stop on the way home!!!
