No, I'm not THAT old (I didn't take this photo). This is from 1910 -- photographer unknown. Karen

That's neat, Karen, you seem to be sitting on a treasure-trove of old photos-thanks for sharing some of them! I wonder if that is a painting rather than a photograph? Rainier looks more like Hood! wink.gif --M&S

Longmire and another image
That postcard of Longmire is on heavy linen and truly hard to tell whether it is a tinted photo or a painting. It looks more like a tinted photograph to me than a painting but am not 100 percent sure. The following photo, though, is definitely a photograph of Whitehorse Mountain taken from Darrington (from the line of the Great Northern). This was from about 1910-1912. Karen

Ok, so how did Whitehorse Mtn get its name? I swear it looks like a horse from Darrington. The angle of the following picture shows it a little better with his nose near the bottom, ears at the top, followed by the mane and body to the left.

I see it, I see it! Do I win anything? Don't answer........ I read a history of Darrington (Originally Barrington, btw) a while ago by Elizabeth S. Poehlman titled Darrington: Mining Town, Timber Town publ. 1979 and that might have the answer in it. Whitehorse is certainly a stunning sight above the town.

Whitehorse
I seem to remember hearing something about why it was named Whitehorse -- one story I've heard is that someone actually did lose a white horse somewhere on the mountain. Egads, I'm right! I just looked it up in Beckey!!!! ....from Beckey .... "The name "Whitehorse" evolved when pioneer Fred Olds' white horse ran away. During the search a neighbor noted the image of a horse in the form of a snowpatch on the mountain and pointed out in jest, "there it is above us". The name, founded in humor, is a good one......" So says Beckey. Karen
