Due to the removal of selective availability and the advant of digital photography virtual hiking has fianally become a reality!. The new field of virtual climbing has become the plus ultra of this activity. The great majortity of first ascents are posted on www.astralclimb.org where the difficulty of ascents ore cataloged and rated but only after aextensive screening by a deam of experts. It is not enough to simply work off an existing "beta" of an established route. The participants who earn the esteemed "first ascent" cachet mut work off of detailed photographs and terraserver aerial maps to establish a record. the recent ascent of Mox Peaks by Derf Yekceb of the croation rebublic is a prime example. Admin note: malachai, you had two posts with the same name. not sure which one was the "final" version so I put both of them in here and deleted the other post. feel free to click on the "edit" button and remove the one that shouldn't be here... Due to the removal of selective availability and the advent of digital photography virtual hiking has fianally become a reality!. The National Park Service has adopted a "wait and see" attitude until all of the enviormental aspects are fully explored and official approval is still years away. Nonetheless renegade hikers are making there presences on virtual mountains accross america. The recreation has the advantage of being impervious to weather, although danger is ever present. Factors favoring approval include the bsence of governmental expense for rescuses and acees for challlengened climbers. Experts forecast that in a few years virtual hiking will be the only accepted method as all remaing forested areas will either be clearcut and stripmined or established as wilderness areas where human entry or observation is stictly prohibited. The Sierra Club has already modifed their outing program to only include virtul and service outings. The administration approves and intends this as a means to prevent pesky ecoterrorists from intruding in the production of essentil resources. with such diespread approval we should accept the trend and go with the flow. The new field of virtual climbing has become the nee plus ultra of this activity. The great majortity of first ascents are posted on www.astralclimb.org where the difficulty of ascents ore cataloged and rated, but only after an extensive screening by a team of experts. It is not enough to simply work off an existing "beta" of an established route. The route must be done clean and no hangdogging or top roping is allowed. The participants who earn the esteemed "first ascent" cachet mut work off of detailed photographs and terraserver aerial maps to establish a record. The recent ascent of Mox Peaks by Derf Yekceb of the Croatian Rebublic is a prime example. Derf first cut a trail from the Canadian border in secret by conceling the blaze from the inquiring gaze of terraserver by the use of 1024 bit PGP encoding. Only the savy webmasters knew of teh extent of the project. The climb was acomplished in the depths of winter to both ensure dificulty and elude detection. Buy clever use of differential GPS bearings and 3d photos he was able to determine every move on the 5.17c route which included a delicate tyrolian traverse from the south peak without placement of anchors. The climb was all the more acomplished by the placement of severl fecund european browns in a small pool at the summit tarn. While frozen at the present moment they will provied endless hours of enjoyment for the hoards of virtual anglers to follow. Derf has indicated thet future climbs include the infmous Dango Tower and hereto unclimed K-3.

No wonder kids can't pass that presidential fitness test. Exercise may be virtual, but calories aren't. agree.gif shakehead.gif
