The upper parts (trailhead to Union Creek) are certainly not a winter hike. That area gets a lot of snow, some parts apparrently aren't clear until mid June or later. I've hiked small bits and pieces of the upper sections, and it's very scenic. One of the Falcom guides said that was the best part of the trail, but since it's starting around 5000'+, that won't be clear for a while.

Thanks but the section I'm talking about is on the other side of Grants Pass. I think the highest point in that area is just around 2000 feet or so. I don't live that far from Union Creek and we go up there a lot, but not now that's for sure. smile.gif

I knew that. paranoid.gif biggrin.gif Wouldn't that be the Lower Rogue Trail then? And I'm sure that's hikeable in the winter. Check out "Hiking Oregon's South Cascades and Siskyous" out by Falcon Press. They've got pretty indepth stuff on that area.

Since I live by what I consider the upper rogue I never think of that lower area as the upper rogue either. I did get exactly that book you mentioned last night. It considers the lower rogue the last part of it where it dumps into the ocean. Go figure. Thank's for your help, I appreciate it.

Upper, lower, wherever the hell it is -- hmm, my ol' trip report calls it "upper" -- http://www.wta.org/~wta....+trails er.. maybe you'll have to search for it if that link doesn't work, "Rogue River" found it for me. I never did post a more detailed report or pictures as promised in the trip report. First twenty miles, to Marial, is the away from civilization part. Last half, you'll be hiking by some folk's houses etc, especially once you get past whatever-bar it is, the spot that is the limit of running powerboats up the river. Still a nice hike. Of course, while you're headed towards the coast if not to it, you'll be getting in wetter and wetter country as you head downriver. As noted in my report, there were places where the trail had slid out, and it was darn steep down to rocks/river - I was glad it wasn't wet when I was crossing those slides. I found a neat guide to the trail -- FS website or something? that listed a bunch of neat history w/ mile posts - mines, indian battles, all kinda fun stuff. Feel free to ask more questions if any, and let us know how the trip goes! -- Erik the Nav ps, oh yeah, this time of year the backroad shortcuts for a drive around might well be closed for snow, so you're looking at a long drive around to the coast. Mom lives in Coos County and was kind enough to shuttle me back from droppin' off my wheels at Illahee and drive me to Graves Creek the next mornin' - so of course, we went around via hwy 42. She even hiked the first three miles with me.

Thanks Erik I think we will do that hike the last week of March. Spring break. The shuttle service is probably our best bet. I think the road is open now but it's still a very long drive as that road is super slow. We went to Graves Creek bridge this weekend and walked about 3 miles down the trail and back. It's a very nice trail and has gorgeous views. I'm anxious to spend a few days on it. Thanks for your help. Al
