For those of you who enjoy old postcards and photographs as much as I do ... have you ever seen "Greetings From Washington" (a glimpse of the past through postcards) by Lane Morgan. The book was published in Portland, Oregon (Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co.) Many of the postcards were submitted by deltiologists from their postcard collections -- Harry Kelsey for one. I knew Harry and his wife, Pat. Harry used to write for Pack and Paddle Magazine (when it was the "old" Signpost). He went under the name of hmk when he wrote articles. I bet some of you other old timers have come across hmk in those old Signposts.
Anyway, Harry was a cranky but lovable curmudeon who loved the mountains, the arts, and history. But I am drifting ... sorry!
I don't know if the book is rare or not (I can't figure out the publication date from the Roman Numerals -- duh!) but I think it came out in the early 1980s. It's a beautiful book and the images from the post cards are just gorgeous.
Anyway, here's an image ....

That's an interesting photo. I did a quick search and came up with the following:
Quote:
Although the chains at front and back were intended to keep the cars in place, the primitive brakes on the early cars that used the ferry sometimes failed to hold. Cars and passengers were sometimes lost when cars rolled off of the ferry into the surging Columbia.

Not to start a rush, but....
believe I saw a copy of "Greetings from Washington"
on the 2nd floor of Half Priced Book on Roosevelt Way
north of 45th near the University District....
