So at what point can pages from an old book be copied and posted on the internet--or can that ever be done? Does anyone know the copyright laws?

LoW is a government publication, published by the state of Washington. As such, I believe it is in the public domain.

That's not really fair, Mr. Naffer is my cousin! He got one set by default! Get ready, these are third editions (1973), near perfect shape. Hard case. Ta da! TB

Hmm, I'm not sure which statistic to calculate. The odds of winning or the odds of BPJ actually showing up at the social tongue.gif.

I second the nomination. Not sure if I can make it but if so I will bring along a great cd of getting to the trail music or any other destination for that matter, for the hat drawing.

It's pretty safe to say that if we take all of man kinds accumulated knowledge, we still don't know everything. So, I hope you understand why I don't believe you know everything. But then again, maybe you do.

You guys are chittin' me, right? wazzup.gif These books are worth something? I remember spending hours poring over the pages when I discovered them on my dad's bookshelf as a teen. What a great resource they are. Dad gave me both volumes in hardback, Third Edition (1973). It would be great if somebody would put out a new edition, complete with color pictures, I imagine they'd have no problem selling copies.

A fuxk, why do I not give one?

Pictures of remote lakes, in color? I can just envision the backlash lol.gif. BTW, I checked out a copy of the LOW books from the Downtown Seattle Public Library to bring along to the social just in case BPJ has an emergency and doesn't show.

They generally run $75 to $125 for the pair, in good condition. No kidding! And yes, someone like Mountaineers Press should do a run of them, and they would sell a lot of them, methinks!

I find it interesting that, considering all the hot discussion of the impact of information dissemination, particulary the impact concerning alpine lakes, there has been no similar discussion about the impact of these books. If the Mountaineers reprinted them with or without updated information, what kind of impact would that bring? Where's the heated debate?

These books are just an inventory of lakes and they attempt to list every lake in the state. The western WA edition lists over 3,800 lakes and the listings are very dry with just name, location, surface area, elevation, drainage, etc. Nothing about access. They are a valuable resource, but but they don't direct traffic to any particular destination and because they are very valuable to land managers and biologists they have a net benefit to the resource.
