My chocolate always melts and my cheese always seperates when backpacking. I like to keep these items within reach for snacking along the trail, but unless I keep them wrapped tight and packed deep in my pack they usually dont last past day one. Anyone got any tips for keeping my Snickers from melting on the trail?

Stuart,What I do is double up a large ZipLock freezer bag put some ice in it and your good to go.This usually keeps my beer ice cold until I reach my destination. drink.gif To be safe from leakage I wrap the ziplock bags in some plastic bags.I hope this helps in some way.

Beyond ice, you need to insulate. I realized a couple months ago that my bag cozies insulated cold as well. Woo-hoo...no more melted chocolate! also, if near a cold stream at night, bag your food and park it in the stream (tethered) for a frig effect.

Let 'em melt. This stuff'll re-solidify during the night as Sarbar says. Keep this stuff in baggies to contain the liquid. The looks of them are altered the next day, but it's still good. By day 3, the cheese tastes like the mold that it is, but it'll sustain your life to the next meal, and by day 3 that's about all you need anyway. If you're lucky it'll turn into penicillin. Unless you're allergic, you'll be one healthy dude. I keep mine buried in the pack. Handy is one thing, keeping it cooler is another. Sometimes you just can't have it both ways. Soon as you reconcile yourself to this fact, the happier you'll be.

Melted snickers bars are still snickers bars, and still tasty. They're just kinda messy to eat. But you're hiking - so you're dirty and sweaty anyway so who cares? But in the off chance you do care, you can hand your chocolate to me and I'll take care of the problem for you. wink.gif Same with the cheese. It gets melty and greasy, but it's still cheese and still tasty. So your fingers get kinda greasy when you eat it. Unless you just peel back the baggie and eat bites of cheese sort of like you're eating a burrito. By day 5 if you're not willing to eat just about anything that looks remotely food like, you haven't been on the same hikes I have. (I think it was Kleet last year who was heard saying "yeah, it's gross, but it's sumpin different for breakfast" while he snarfed down an instant scrambled egg thing) Just don't store your cheese in the same baggie as the smoked salmon. That gets revolting quick. Keep everything segregated in it's own baggy.

If life gives you melons - you might be dyslexic

My dayhike solution is to freeze a juice box and put it in the pack next to anything I want cold. Then by lunch time on a hot day, you've got a slushy beverage and cold chocolate.

Yea right. From the person that can't discuss normal backcountry topics like pitching a tent or firewood without giggling like a teenager.
