Quote: | did the burn get into the valley between Windy & Haig, or only south of Windy? |
See the panos I posted with my TR such as it was. I think the fire was called the Tripod Complex and after being there it is clear that while it did burn some areas heavily it also skipped and jumped around as the name suggests. The area around Windy got hit pretty hard. Haig looked to be mostly fine as is most of the northern area.

We did the same thing and froze Mon night 6/25 with temps well down into the 20's. It had snowed the night before our arrival. On the plus side, no bugs and pleasant daytime temps.

This photo can't be from Arnold Pk. Perhaps you mean the Albert Trail 375 which takes off just N of Sunny Pass and gives easy access to Horseshoe Pk. By the way, that rock knob is just a spur on the side of Horseshoe Pk

"Sadie's Summit"
Yea!
Anyone know if one can get a place named such-and-such by USGS--the way one can name a star?

Matt -
The area west (Windy Creek area) and North of Windy Peak (where I call it "Hell Canyon" is burned - see pic:
2 labels Burn line running north/south towards Rock
Also, there is burn between the northside of Rock and the south side of Haig. It's pretty sad! s.d.

Hi -
That's what I said/meant in the picture caption - it should have said "Albert" not Arnold - but the Fourteen Mile part was right!!! We were on that trail which is to the south of Horseshoe Peak. Thnx. s.d.

SD & Mike, thank you for identifying the fire pictures, it gives me a much clearer idea of what burned. Sad to see the valley damage, but I'm actually very happy to see that the high meadows and larchy mountainsides generally escaped the fire. Many of the most beautiful parts of the area look to be still intact.

Another FWIW:
I think the peak you have called Haig Mtn is the unnamed peak (pt2395m) north of Rock Pk and the Boundary Trail. My map shows Haig several miles farther west and not on the border. If that is border monument 102 in the pictures it would confirm it. elev is about the same as haig too.

Mike, youl'll eventually get us squared away. A look at the map shows you are correct. Yep, that was not Haig. All that thin air must have frazzled my brain.

There is a reason I am "just the Driver!" Oh well, the whole damn thing can be "Sadie's Summit" - only seems right.

Just interested in what map you were using for this hike? I'll have to pick one up next time I'm south of the border(If I don't already have it)!
Thanks, Dusty

Thanks, Dusty |
For the US side I printed from TOPO! Plus north of the border I have Ashnola River 92 H/1 which is Catherdral Provincial Park. Wish I had 82 E/4

Horseshoe Basin and most of its environs is on Green Trails #21 Horseshoe Basin. Haig and some other terrain on the western end are on #20 Coleman Peak.
