So bonking during long cycling trips has gotten me interested in energy gels. The first one I ever tried was a Gu packet years ago when these were still new, and I couldn't even finish the thing. I recently tried a Clif Shot and it was much easier to down. I'm also interested in Cytomax gel since I've heard good things about their products.
Do you goo? What tastes good, is easy to down, and most of all boosts performance?

I like Gu Vanilla Bean and Tri-Berry.
Shot Blocks, I usually buy Orange, Cran-Razz, or Black Cherry.
I buy Gu and Shot Blocks online at www.performancebike.com.

The apple cinnamon ones taste like apple pie filling. Check those out for sure.

I like the orange and lemon flavored Gu's. Espresso isn't too bad either if you're in the mood for that sort of flavor. I can't do chocolate, too much for me.

I prefer any variety with DOUBLE CAFFEINE stamped in big letters.

I look for them, but those always seem to be the coffee flavor.

I like the chocolate GU. The other flavors I've tried were all kinda nasty IMO. The main thing I don't like about the gel shots is that you're stuck with a messy package after you eat it. I perfer these...
They come in several tasty flavors and you can even get them with caffine if you are so inclined!

I typically don't use gels anymore. They are far too messy, especially on long trips. I stick to Bloks, but even better are the Honey Stinger Fruit Chews. They taste as good as Bloks but have a way better texture, plus you get 10 smaller chews in each package, instead of 6 larger ones in Bloks.

I hated the mess too, but a small zip lock plastic sandwich bag solves that problem. Just down the thing, and stick the empty messy pouch in the zip lock. Never had a problem doing that, even easier than when cycling when messing with a zip lock can be a pain. Hiking, not an issue.
Advantages of the gels, you can just down them quickly, don't have to spend a lot of time munching something down. Great on the go. When I stop I more often eat real food.
The gels aren't about taste, but about staying supplied with energy for the duration of the work.
