Wow, that is one beautiful shot yukon222! Gorgeous!
Here's two for the birders out there. A rare bird this far south (Vancouver, BC).

Karen, I'm not a birder, but is that a snowy owl? ("barred have brown eyes")
Confused, because of the comment they're rare that far south. I think Washington has a fair amount of 'em (relatively speaking)....?

In honor of the demise of Kodachrome, I went through old slides to see what I could scan in. Here are two -- the first from a hiking trip in South Africa's Drakensburg Mountains, the other from a trek up to Skeleton Pass on the Zimbabwe-Mozambique border.

Heh - nope! The answer you seek is in the "trip report".
It is a Northern Hawk Owl. They are normally found in boreal forests, but will travel slightly south during winter months. There was one over on Vancouver Island a few years ago and I missed my chance to see it. This one however is much closer to home so I figured it was worth a trip over to Reifel to see it.
I was actually surprised how small it was. Based on all the photos I saw, I expected some sort of fat owl monstrosity, but it was typical small hawk sized.
