I climb this trail often enough. If there is something simple an unskilled person such as myself can do to fix that mudhole, please let me know. I am happy to toss a few rocks or gravel into it if needed, each time I pass. Also willing to lend a hand on a weekend as part of a work party. As I said, I get a lot of use out of this trail.
By the way, one of the logs on the lower staircases has fallen out. It looks to have previously been held in with cable.

Help keep that spot free of logs.
Move them far from the spot so they don't get put right back and/or create other drainage issues. If/when we get a bucket and shovel or pulaski up there, toss in a bucket of gravel each trip. The underlying problem is that area is a low spot on the trail and there is a berm on both sides that causes water to pond. The logs are a short-term fix that actually make the problem worse over time, as they cause more water to pond there and decay into mud.
Thank you!

Is there any reason a sign cannot be made and posted, stating the above.
Thus possibly educating the people who are making the organic fix?
and allowing a proper fix to be made?

Good grief, there is enough timber in that mess to build a bridge.

Yea and the problem is it will be a never ending battle as those not in the know will continue to do the log thing and it will be a constant battle until someone can get up there and fix it in a relatively short period of time to not allow the log throwers opportunities to become active again.
I'm sure these people think they are helping and unless they are educated (I suspect < 1% of Cable Line trail users read NWhikers ) it will just continue until the problem doesn't exist.

I can't believe there's a thread on this. I've noticed this phenomenon only recently, but it annoys me more than blue bags of poop.
worthless bridge on Tiger Mtn.
Thanks for the gesture and all, but I would rather walk in the mud than snap an ankle on one of these insane versions of the Atlantic City boardwalk.

Maybe we'll leave the logs and plug some slot machines into the exposed cable. Anyone got some wirenuts?

I'm bringing a shovel on thursday! Alas, I wont have any buckets. Anyone who wants to bring a bucket and haul some of the rocks downhill to the site is welcome to it.

Bring a sign -- I'm sure the people who throw logs in there think they're helping.

Wear calks.
What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Now that I can see the pix I realized it's not the spot I thought it was! I thought it was the flat spot where they piled all the logs to block off the side route down to the previous flat at 1323'. I thought all the action would be near point 1896'.

It's great people are trying to fix that the right way. But i hate to break it to ya all.....but that thing is a freaking mess. To do it right in addition to removing the logs...and the already decayed logs turned to mud, then fill with gravel.
There's at least two full days work there with four or five people.
You guys need to organize.

That would be great and it doesn't have to be that complicated or organized to make a substantial improvement.
It's already a lot better as just a very few people have been moving a log or two at a time and it's nearly cleaned out of them now. That same group dumping a bucket of gravel/hike will make a nice improvement before winter.
It's always been muddy there (and several other places on this trail). It just got a lot worse last fall/winter as so many new logs were dumped in that spot. It doesn't need to be made perfect; better would be just fine.
I'll get a laminated sign up there this week. I'll also see about getting a five gallon bucket and entrenching shovel left in the spot.
