Note1: lots of rangers about patrolling. We saw three. Don't even think about camping in the area without a permit.
No kidding. We were up there on Friday. I counted 4 rangers. On the way back nearing Cascade Pass one was using an ice ax to cut steps up that snow bank as the route then told us he had just done that and to go his way. I guess he didn't like people detouring around all the little "closed" paths to avoid that hump of snow.
I talked to the last ranger I saw on the way back. He said they had a lot of problems with dogs and people without permits. In fact he asked me if I had seen like a party of 17 camping without a permit up there that he was heading up to deal with.
What a beautiful place though. No wonder so many people head up there and want to camp. He also said there are only 6 permits per night issued to camp in the campsite up the arm. max of 12 per party but they won't issue 6 parties of 12.
Looks like the ranger even worked on those steps even more since we passed through Friday afternoon. They actually looks like a staircase instead of smaller boot steps. Was there a ranger there to make sure people took that route? It isn't obvious with the snow still there especially coming from Cascade Pass.
