When I was younger I traveled through western Virginia with my Dad and the beauty of that area still sticks in my mind 45 years later. He was a truck driver and we took the back roads to avoid scales on our way to DC and Baltimore. Chesapeake Bay was awesome as well.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I visited Palm Canyon in December, it was a good walk. I kept going up the wash on a faint trail to the upper ridge area, beautiful.

Got sporophytes? This image shows a spore capsule after the protective calyptra and operculum have fallen off. The teeth are called perisotome and I believe I can actually see spores. The capsule must have just opened. This was taken at Shoreview Park a couple of days ago.

San Francisco Botanical Garden at Golden Gate Park. Both the Berkeley and San Francisco botanical gardens have extensive displays of South African flora which - despite the interpretive sign claiming otherwise - mostly bloom in the southern hemisphere spring and summer (our fall and winter). So if you yearn for flowers in the winter, these are good places!

I walked from Alpental up to Source Lake this week to look at ... snow. Got buzzed by a couple of feathered fighter pilots too.
