I like the P.S.! I added a blurb about volunteer trail maintenance on my comment, too! It's not all about recreation; it's volunteer opportunities that make us feel happy and useful, it's photography of spring and fall 'shrooms, the alpine blueberries on Green Mtn, Green mtn for summer flowers and fall colors; gigantic old growth on Doweny, Sulphur Mtn and Milk Creek, laying on a giant rock at the edge of the river on a sunny afternoon, and just being there for no reason.
And seeing all these places a few times each year; various seasons, in different weather; fog and rain, sunshine, spring, summer, fall, winter.
Looking forward to getting back there several times per year again!

Nice, but I'd like to get beyond Buck Creek or Green Mtn Pasture on a routine basis like I used to do. I'm talking a hike up Downey Creek, or the summit of Green Mtn, or Sulphur Hot Springs trail. Milk Creek would be nice, but I understand if we have to wait another half-decade or so; the EA mentions a repair of Milk Creek - haven't rec'd confirmation that that is tied to road repairs or not. Sometimes funding can require stuff like that.

The Wilderness Society is supporting Alternative B -- requesting that access be saved to Glacier Peak Wilderness!
An action alert has been launched, sending a letter to Western Federal Lands Highway Division in support of Alternative B. If you feel so inclined...
Click here to read an article about why The Wilderness Society is supporting Alternative B.
"The Wilderness Society firmly believes to create future stewards of our public resources we must provide the opportunity for people to experience the wild places that will inspire them to care—the Suiattle offers such an opportunity."

Thanks wamtngal. The Wilderness Society position seems to fit very nicely with what the pro Alt B group has been saying. For those who have been procrastinating, the link above and again below requires only your name, address, and email to be filled in. Then hit "send message" and your message will be sent. Can't be any easier than that!

(N3C's "creative engineering" proposal, especially their temporary 210-foot log trestle extension to the Downey Creek "trail bridge", expected to be washed out and rebuilt every 10 years, is simply ludicrous.) |
You gotta give 'em credit for being farsighted and ambitious. If the log trestle were constructed just right, it just might take out the SR530 bridge during future floods.

To be fair, the newest version (April 12th) of their modifications for Alt C eliminated the word "timber" from "trestle bridge." They probably didn't mean to be that exact with the description of the bridge, but just sorta threw that in there during the brainstorming stage and didn't take it out unitl now.
Treated wood is an unsatisfactory material for fish; Alaska yellow-cedar doesn't need treatment - its expensive - but the exact material, like much of the proposal, is vague because they're not engineers and really can't be more exact. I think Pilchuck Audubon still says something about a wood bridge; haven't paid much attention to what they've got going on - based on what Johnson has written, its no secret they want the road to be closed, but I think they're going with a modified C.

Thanks for all for the good discussion about the alternatives on various threads, and for making it so easy to send a letter. It is also good to see groups like WTA and The Wilderness Society supporting repair to the road's end. Letter sent in support of Alternative B.
