This is a two-minute exposure, hence the blurry Milky Way. This is up in Carne Mountain Basin.

The sawtooths above Mildred Lakes. I could have used a tripod and a remote shutter release but I had neither.

This on my second trip up to Carne Mountain Basin, on an absolutely perfect night.
Cold night camped on the ridge under a full moon, surrounded by larch.

The big-dipper over Rampart Lakes. Finally getting the hang of manual-focus in the dark with my NEX6.

Seems like you want to be focused on infinity for this kind of photography, you want the stars to be sharp, and you want a big aperture to have them show up, which means not a lot of depth of field.
You can AF or MF on infinity before the sun goes down if you're not going to use your camera again until the stars come out. Then it's already focused.

Love that one Gil!
Thanks to the government f'ing up my perfect plans of camping at the racetrack in Death Valley at the racetrack for some night shots under the nearly full moon I had to make alternate plans. I used some new tools on this trip, shooting almost exclusively with my Fuji X-E1 and a variety of lenses. The first shot is at Red Rock Canyon SP. For the second I used The Photographers Ephemeris on my phone and realized the moon was going to set in a great spot so I got up in the middle of the night and took some shots.

Yes, that's what I used to do with my Canon dSLR. But finding infinity focus is surprisingly hard on the NEX system. There isn't a mechanical linkage for the manual focus ring so you can keep spinning it beyond infinity. The camera doesn't seem to have a memory for your focus setting when it's turned off/on either. Best solution I've found is to use the "focus peaking" mode and aim it at the brightest thing in the sky and slowly focus until the color indicator lights up. Hit and miss, but that's the price I pay for a lighter setup I guess.
