In case anyone wants to expand their range down to the Far Northern CA redwoods, don't overlook the wonderful coastline in Humbolt County.

Bittersweet visit a couple weekends ago, to an old stomping ground of my wife and I. One of her sisters lives in Trinidad, and we spent a lot of time there many years ago. This visit was a memorial gathering for her recently passed mom, and a bit of a family reunion for her side of the family.
Skip the casino on Scenic drive, outside of the bustling metropolis of the downtown core of Trinidad, but explore the various climbs down to the beach below. Moonstone beach will be packed, on the same day you will only have a few people on the far superior Luffenholtz beach. Which we can also observe from Renee's sister's house.

For a flashback to hippie days, check out Arcata square, especially on Saturday morning market.

Normally, we hit the many hikes of Patricks Point state park, which I highly recommend, but this time we just squeezed in a huge family group hike at a small uncrowded trail just north of the town of Trinidad. Guide service provided by my niece Megan. You can tell by our rigorous preparation and serious gear, that it was very tough hike.

Usually we spend a lot more time actually on Luffenholtz beach. This time I just got down to the beach for a quick visit with a small group of us that headed down. But what a great day it was! Unusual to get great clouds like this in the summer. The fog is pretty standard issue in summer though.

The rest of the weekend bounced between the usual fog and late afternoon sun.

The siblings were all hoping for a sunny memorial service on Luffenholtz point. I thought the "muffled drums" was an appropriate atmosphere.
The Point was a good spot for this, but I will keep their moment private.

An awesome place to explore. Don't get so caught up in the redwoods that you miss the coast line if you are down that way.

I drove a lot of the California coast last summer (San Luis Obispo northward via Hwy 1 and 101). I must've drove thru Arcata and Trinidad, but it all kinda turned into a blur eventually. I think I went to Patrick Point SP but it was foggy and I didn't stay long. Looks like I missed some cool stuff in that area.

We went through in July on the way to San Diego. There is so much beautiful coast in Norther California that it should be illegal. Went to dozens of pristine era he's with no people.

Thanks for the report on Trinidad. I spent the night there coming back from a Southern California visit in April of 2011. 'Sorry for your family's loss, boot up. Your sister-in-law lived in one of the most scenic towns on the coast.

I had been visiting the Central Coast as well and drove back this time further north on I-5 and departed west from Redding on Hwy 299. It's winds and curves through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, but is fairly direct in the long run to the coast from the interior. It was still Spring back in there and the hills were green and the redbuds were blooming. There was snow in the mountains. The highway meets the Trinity River near Douglas City for a few miles, but eventually after you pass through the historic mining town of Weaverville, it follows the river for miles and miles until it splits off near the town of Willow Creek where the river heads north. Not much traffic and a lot of driving in beautiful rhythm with the river. This is gorgeous country. Then eventually you arrive in Arcata and Trinidad is just up the road. The town had a great feeling, so much scenery there and big trees--Coastal Redwoods. You will see great local artwork in the shops and restaurants. It's definitely a place to work into your intinerary if headed to Northern California. From there, I drove on to Port Orford, Oregon and back to Eugene via Florence. ~z
