I had an identical experience on that summit ridge. The loose talus up there (and the fact that I was alone) made me not even consider venturing out on that final ridge, and in my mind it was close enough of a "summit" to satisfy me. Beautiful pics. Due to the smoke, I am struggling back and forth as to whether to venture out this weekend on a fairly ambitious plan. I'm not sure if this swayed me more towards yes or no, haha.

Thanks for the report. Great pics to show how smoky it is up there. And that summit ridge looks gnarly. Could you post a pic of your bug jacket or a link? Sounds really interesting. ~z

Yup, the talus leading up to the summit ridge looks so inviting...until you're on it. In retrospect, I probably should've just sucked it up and traversed over to the summit. It didn't seem above my skill level, but I'm learning much of climbing is as much about your mental state as it is your physical state. Hope you have a good time and clear views wherever you go!

This is the bug jacket I got. I bought it at REI on my way back from Jade Lake in desperation (it was the only one they had left). You can definitely find much cheaper ones online. I think even just having the head net was super helpful. I was skeptical at first since I've gotten mosquito bites through my baselayer and Patagonia hoodie, but they just buzzed incessantly around me and never bite through the netting.

whoa! I love those hazy layers - reminds me of my time up on Vesper last year. It's actually way clearer than I would have expected compared to some other recent TRs

Sad when we did Hinman in the 1980s it was an easy walk in the snow. Only hazard was descending the wrong ridge. Several NWH members have been injured there in the last few years.

Thank you for the insect gear link, omhk. I appreciate it. I have a head net already, but this looks more like for entering a bug tsunami. Must be bad up there. I haven't been out in a few weeks, but the reports are coming in from all over. ~z

Thanks for the report -- the haze does provide a different perspective.

Thank you for your trail report. For your consideration may I suggest spraying your clothing with permethin, it is very effecive at keeping the mossies and ticks away.

up.gif Nice trip! Disclaimer: I have never actually been there, but from reports I gather that it is better to not follow the ridge to Hinman, but traverse quite a bit lower. The real summit is around the corner of the N-S ridge. In icy conditions that may require crampons though (the dead glacier seems to come out later in the year).
