I've always wanted to go up Mt. Aix but never got a round to it until this weekend. Left Ellensburg at 6:30am and left the trailhead at 8:45am. Road was well marked and found the trailhead no problem. I could see above me the hills were white which got me excited to be walking on fresh fallen snow.

Probably hit snow after about 4 miles and it got up to my lower kneecap for about a mile with no signs of the trail so I was just working my way up and right towards the ridge. Post holing made the going rough but once I got closer to the ridge it lessened and I could move much quicker. Saw my objective once I topped out on the ridge and was happy to see there wasn't going to be any more deep snow. Made the summit at 1:20pm. Thanks to the other two guys from Yakima for making steps before I caught up to them and it was my turn. Snowshoes would have helped but not sure if they would have been worth hauling them up the snow free part of the trail.

Nice one. I spent a snow-free Halloween up there years back. That's certainly not the case this year.

A day I will soon not forget. Cold, struggling through deep snow, and the final steps to the summit was just sweet.

Aix is a fun one to do late fall. Gets a person in shape for snowshoeing season. There was a lot more snow in the higher elevations last week in the Bumping. Decided to rain pretty good Thursday and unfortunately most of the snow melted. I was doing some hunting across the river from the road and the log I crossed in the morning was under water.

Have I offended you today?

Nice work. I remember it being a long haul to get up to that ridge.

No I only saw the two other guys from Yakima, but I heard about that guy and it made me think because that is near the area where they say his cell phone stopped "pinging". PCT hikers should be aware and prepared for cold damp weather this time of year and should really try to be done by the last week of September. I Hope he makes it out okay.

Unfortunately it sounds like he was only just recently preparing for the cold, and buying warmer clothing from Goodwill before he set out for this section. Really a shame.

I read that article and it sounds like he had his mind made up to make it to Canada no matter what. Sounds like another sad case where desire controls the decision making process, and not taking into account the reality of the situation.
