Since I moved out here 12 years ago I have done about every combination of loop in the Foothills and you can get 8.5 miles and 3000' from looping within the Foothills area along it's perimeter using various ridges, canyons, and high points. Solitude can be found at times still while getting a workout hike in, but it's starting to get domesticated and overused, however as Steve found out after two trips surrounded by many hunters it has it's times in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. We did get a nice 6 miles, 2000' of exercise in though. The snow level in the area seems to be above 5000' still and the sage brush muted the smell of controlled burning nearby. We had a good lunch and talked about regaining momentum for hiking and backpacking the S&P in 2017. Good time.

Sheesh...looks like we almost crossed paths yesterday. I was in the area a little earlier, but on a loop slightly to the south. I love impromptu hikes but only if I get the txt before I am already several miles into my own hike. It was a nice day though! up.gif up.gif

We didn't know if or where we were going until the a.m. and weren't hiking until 11 a.m. it did end up being a nice day though. I have been doing some fast paced nonstop speed hiking loops lately around the area at times. Thur. Is suppose to be mostly sunny, possibly, if you can believe it. It''s that time of year when you decide what your going to do after looking out the window. winksmile.gif

Hope you were careful not to put the "endangered" deer herd up there through any distress. I'd hate for them not to be able to come down and enjoy the arborvitae and yew plants because you guys scared them bad. lol.gif rant.gif

I don't think endangered applies to any of the deer around the valley. They're too well fed. If you didn't have those two ferocious guard dogs, the deer would come see you. winksmile.gif
