Went out to Carne Mountain to check out the larches in the Entiats on Sunday; skies were clear in the rainshadow despite rain at Stevens Pass. The road up to the Phelps Creek Trailhead was a disaster, but the larches were at peak color in Carne Basin and more than justified the discomfort of driving across the pothole field that the Forest Service somehow still considers a road. While there were still a good number of hikers- probably 30 or so other people over the course of the day- I didn't have to deal with the absolute hordes that are swarming the Rainy Pass area this time of year. The trail was more than easy to follow; I loved the area and will definitely return for the Carne Mountain High Route/Maude some future fall.
