Whoot! Tom definitely gets some awesome sauce for this implementation.

This is a great feature, also aided by continuing abundance of cheaper storage hardware. I didn't see this mentioned earlier in the thread, but it appears to not default to the caption from the photo metadata (ICMP Caption field). If that's not possible here, that's a good reason to keep using Flickr. I wouldn't want to retype all my captions on upload.
Tom, what does the "=wuw8h" after the image tag do? I realize it's different for each image. Is that a local thumbnail id?

It's problematic to guess what the caption should be (there are a myriad of options which is why it doesn't default to anything). When we automatically added captions for flickr we'd often guess wrong and non-nonsensical captions would show up which is one reason we made it an option as to what flickr caption to display (or none) rather than guess. That said we do preserve metadata in the upload so there's no reason we couldn't pull the caption from the metadata. I suspect most users don't embed captions in the metadata.
wuw8h is the unique id assigned that photo. It's all you really need to display it.
[img]wuw8h[/img] (shortest possible bbcolde)
[img=wuw8h]your_filename.jpg[/img] (longer, but helps you identify the photo uploaded)
https://nwhikers.org/?wuw8h (shortest possible photo url, think of it like tinyurl)
https://nwhikers.org/forums/uploads/1e/b1/wuw8h.jpg (actual photo url)
Here is the metadata in that photo (as you note, a caption is embedded):

Thanks Tom. Those are nice shortcuts to know. I'll keep using Flickr most of the time anyway. But I can see where this feature is great for responding to a TR with just one photo, or a map, or something like that where there's no reason for me to have it on Flickr.
Also re caching photos in TRs, I saved a bunch of old TRs years ago in an archiving tool and many of them have broken image links (not to nwhikers). But with your changes to save a version on the site, I can go back now and re-archive them because the photos are still on the TR on the site.
Great work all around!

Tom, I struggled with posting pictures but your work has made it simple, once I figured it out ( I'm an old ' blackboard and chalk' guy).
My question is how do we post videos that are private ( i.e., not YouTube or Vimeo or other). I haven't found any details on the forum but we see videos in quite a few posts, so it is doable and probably not too difficult.
Help, please.

Unfortunately we don't have the storage space for videos so you'll have to post them on YouTube or another video host and then post the link. The good news is that when you post a YouTube link it will automatically embed the video in the post.
