Today I'm getting "upload failed" from this feature (although the thumbnail preview shows up on the left).
Firefox 101.0 on Linux
I was getting that yesterday too, in the console I was seeing a CORS error:
Access to XMLHttpRequest at 'https://nwhikers.org/' from origin 'http://www.nwhikers.net' has been blocked by CORS policy: Response to preflight request doesn't pass access control check: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource.
nwhikers.org/:1 Failed to load resource: net::ERR_FAILED
I know this topic has been brought up before and LetsEncrypt was mentioned as an easy and free solution for adding SSL to the domain. But that has an obvious pitfall of requiring you to update the cert every three months and all. So I can understand your hesitation around it. Have you considered Cloudflare which also provides a free certificate? I believe it's fully managed as well. And will provide DDOS protection and a CDN.
Tweaked things to allow uploads of HEIC and HEIF images. I didn't realize this was the default image format for apple devices but if you drink that kool aid it should help with some of the after taste.
