Looks like you have made a fantastic choice on relocating. Absolutely gorgeous area. I’m so envious!

a nice overnight snowfall of about 8" welcomed us as we moseyed out of the house to head to a friend's 5th birthday party. many kids were quite excited, as to be expected. following that, and a little rest period, we ventured into the backyard, which is a golf course long since closed for the winter, to make some sled runs and try out the snowshoes.
as my daughter ventured out in the now-14" deep fresh snow, i told her of the story of the snolanator. a PNW native and legend, capable of breaking trail without stops. someone that floats on top, while the rest of us sink. someone with a beautiful rhythm to his snowshoeing gait while launching up rooster tails. someone that would break a trail right next to you, even when there's a deep established trench. like most 5 year olds, stories like this only make it to the second sentence until they remind you that they're a snowshoe hare and the topic quickly is changed. but, seeing the mini-rooster tails gives me hope that in 15 years, i can follow someone else's trench while she floats on top and leaves me in the dust.
happy start to winter in the kootenays. the snow is still coming down (it's not a violent snow like in the PNW, but more like a snowglobe). i've shoveled the driveway three times today. probably at 15" now. tomorrow is the first day of nordic skiing for my daughter and she'll be joined by many of her friends in this small community. i hope to hear that she has turned into a new kind of animal.

Glad you're already getting the kids out on the snowshoes this season. Floating on top take skill. Someday you'll have to teach them how to swim in deep powder!

i've been seeing some nice alpenglow sunsets these past few weeks and wanted to see it a little closer since the light is hitting the rockies which is on the other side of the valley from cranbrook (maybe 40km from kimberley). so, after junior woke from his nap, we boogied out quickly to eager hills, which we had done last summer/fall. the skies were suspect (mix of clouds and sun). getting onto the small side road was the biggest challenge of the day as plowing has left a decent sized windrow. somehow, someone with a sedan was able to clear that (must've gunned it), but then made it halfway up the 200m long road and got stuck on the side. the blocked access for both directions, so there were 3 cars waiting to leave the TH parking and us, who were forced to park on the side of the hwy. fun. anyway, the kids did well in the -8C weather. a solid-enough trench saved us from breaking any trail (not sure if i remember how to do that anymore). alpenglow was a little muted. too many clouds. but, glad we went anyway.

Snolanator= r3h Your delightful adventures with your youngsters remind us so much of 40 years ago. We also have an older daughter and younger son and we loved the local trips around Bellingham. Wonderful memories, so thank you, iron!
