For decades, I've taken hike photos with a small Nikon Coolpix P520.  It fits nicely in my hand and is hard to drop (unlike my phone).  I buy them, used, on Amazon, about $200. 42X tele.  It also is great for flower and fungi closeups.  I have used these cameras for over 100,000 photos, posted to my Flickr site since 2005.

Using an older digital camera makes a lot of sense these days, especially for rough activities like hiking/biking etc. Unless you want to do high quality video an older digital camera will work just fine. Some people are already waxing poetic about the older CCD cameras of yesteryear. Basically old digital cameras are becoming "classics" and not just junk, which is a welcome change.

Some are even developing a "cult" following. I was shocked that the price my FILs Sony Mavica (2MP, 1999 3.5" floppy storage with large zoom range) brought after I thought it was totally obsolete. Not sure if people were harvesting components from it for drones or if the 3.5" floppy was attractive for some reason or what.
