I was already aware of paintbrush from occasionally seeing a couple of varieties while hiking. Just looked it up on wikipedia. Amazing how many varieties there are. Looks like around 90 different species of Castilleja listed in the article. I had no idea.

It's interesting how regional some of the varieties are. They grow across the country, people in the Rockies call them prairie fire. You see them in sunny meadows all over the Cascades. The really crimson ones don't seem to grow north of Rainier. A lot of individual species are pretty limited in their range.
I've never encountered Castilleja levisecta on any of the hikes I've done in that area, although the number of different hikes I do in that area is pretty minimal.
