I saw some pictures at Monte Cristo, a lot of snow at the old town site.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I drove up road 49 from the Darrington side yesterday. Did not drive to the end of the road as there was a water feature about two miles from the end that I did not want to cross in my low rider. It would be easily crossable by most vehicles. No sign of snow on the road but there were plentiful potholes.

Interesting , I suppose there are a lot of people that want to risk death at Big 4 and have no interest in getting over Barlow Pass.

This thread is reminding me of Catch-22. There was the one guy who didn't allow anyone into his office when he was in. However when he was out of the office, anyone was free to visit.

Some of my favorite hikes are along the MLH, but I can't help but think this announcement means car clouting season is now open.

As far as I know the bridge over the Stilly has still not been repaired and wading the river would be a near a suicide endeavor. We saw a woman carrying a toddler across the river last July and they were nearly swept downstream into the rapids. Hopefully they will repair the bridge this year.

As of 1 1/2 weeks ago the Darrington side has to be in the running for worst potholed road in the area. At least honorable mention.

Big 4 -- it's a great Darwin Award opportunity all around!

How many hikers have died there versus the Enchantments?

I was wondering if NFS foot-dragging for getting the bridge back up might turn into something permanent for "safety" vis a vis the ice caves. If so, a few river-fording mishaps may convince them it's not the solution.

They don't need mishaps to learn a lesson that they should fix the bridge or build a new one. They are well aware folks ford and float boats to get across, and likely want a bridge there. More likely the problem is money ( it usually is) ,, including a new design and an environmental assessment. The river channel widened, and they can't put a post in the riverbed to support a longer bridge ( regulations and laws). The last design was a special design for stability of a long bridge with no post. A new one would have to be even longer, or in a different location in a narrower channel with stability ( I don't think that's possible on that stretch of river..?) Haven't kept up with big 4 doings.

I saw people attempting to wade across it this winter, also read reports of people crossing it this winter and being disappointed that it was just “mounds of snow at the bottom of a mountain”.

IDK, but one usually needs to hike several hours to get into the killing fields of the Enchantments, vs Big 4 killing folks an easy stroll from their car. Big 4 ice caves killed people before Instagram, I think the big growth in mishaps in the Enchantments have been more recent.

Actually very few people have died there. It's a regular for injuries though.
