Hammerhead Karoo users will, providing they do actually update the firmware on the date it is released, lose the ability to see their battery level, shifter mode, front and rear derailleur indications and also they will no longer be able to cycle through the data screens using the buttons hidden in the hoods. https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/shimano-cuts-hammerhead-integrations-after-sram-acquisition/

I wonder how long Karoo users will be able to defer installing this "update" until it bricks?

Almost certainly forever. But HammerHead puts out feature releases twice a month and sooner or later there's going to be something everyone wants.

This is a little baffling because (1) Shimano doesn't make head units, (2) Shimano does make power meters and so they compete against Garmin who they're allowing to continue working with Di2, and (3) this only hurts Shimano customers, and only those who spent extra on the D Fly. People Shimano should want to keep happy. Ok, a lot baffling. Shimano competes against SRAM who bought HammerHead and both companies make electronic drivetrains.
