Cyclopath is a speed demon and uses them to know when cops are around the corner so he can slow down.
More seriously they detect and alert when cars are coming up behind you.
I guess I'm cycling accessory naive. One would need bike radar for what? A skim of the article wasn't that enlightening.
It's for safety. When there's traffic behind you:
Your computer/watch tells you.
Your computer/watch shows you the # of vehicles behind you, also shows you their speed and locations (eg where the gaps are).
The tail light starts flashing and matches the speed of its flash with the speed of the first driver. To communicate your presence and remind drivers about safe driving behavior.
In the many years I've been using this, there are two key things I've noticed. I ride in the middle of the lane where the pavement is better when nobody is behind me, and move to the side when a car shows up behind me. The # of negative interactions I have with drivers has fallen sharply.
I paid more than it sounds like this will cost for mine, on sale. It sounds like this is as good at being a radar, but the battery lasts much longer. Kind of a no brainer to get this one.
Every cyclist who rides much (with traffic) should have one.
Until now Garmin has been the only game in town for this.
