It's a great example of a hike ruined by social media. When I did it last year it had the most amount of toilet paper and trash I've ever seen on a trail...
It is not Covid specifically. It has just become one of the Washington Hikers & Climbers / Instagram fad hikes over that period. Before that it was Hidden Lake Lookout. Not seeing as many selfies from HLL lately, although I'm sure it's also still fairly busy.
It's good to check WH&C to see where the hordes are going. Lately, Tolmie Peak has been one of the most posted spots, up there with Summit Lake, Blanca Lake, Colchuck Lake and Mt. Fremont.
