I had the opportunity to hike all weekend, so I visited three summits and one lake in the Olympic National Forest. First up was Mt Crag east of Mt Constance/Tunnel Creek (great route info provided by NateB and Seekapeak) on Friday the 13th.

I visited Mt Townsend (from the Little Quilcene TH) and Welch Peak on Saturday the 14th. The rain came in earlier than expected (~1230) and was pretty steady by the time I arrived back at my vehicle (yeah, pollen coating was washed off!!).

And for today, I visited a lake (which I'm calling "Sunday") in the Staircase area, pretty much shrouded in clouds, but no rain.

Nice trip and great shot of that grouse. I hear them all the time, but I've not yet seen the neck display.

Thank you RR and Gimpilator, I really liked the grouse... it did not seem to care at all that I was driving right up to it, it hardly budged until I was 4 feet away, then it just nonchalantly sauntered off to the road side while I passed. But by golly those birds can give you a good jump scare when, at less than a yard away, they finally decide to flee from you, with a low frequency "whoosh" sound (never mind that, initially bizarre, low alien thrumming call.... a little haunting when you are out hiking alone and are unfamiliar with the mountain chicken's call) bobbi, thank you for the flower ID. I sure did appreciate all the little flowers popping out now all over the Olys. My camera really did them no justice w.r.t. capturing the vibrant pinks and purples.

(Late to this thread while looking up info on Welch Peak.) Trillium ovatum blossoms normally turn pink or rose after an initial bloom of white.

Thanks for the explanation on the Trillium Brushbuffalo! Would temperature or moisture be the primary causes of the later color change? @ Pyrites: I wish they had done that. I later went back and somehow ended up following the exact same offtrail route up Mt Crag and came across the then slightly-more-degraded weather balloon radiosonde sensor package remains and brought it back home. There was a plastic mailing envelope to send it back to a central refurb center, but upon further checking online, they would have just disposed of it anyways since the NWS had gone to a newer model instrument package.

Meck, the color change is normal but I am not sure what biochemical mechanism causes it.
