From WSDOT this evening: “North Cascade Highway SR 20 closed because of mudslides near Mazama Sept. 14, 2022 NORTH CASCADES - All lanes of SR 20 are closed between MP 134 near the Ross Trailhead and MP 173 near Mazama due to mudslides that may have undermined the roadway. Drivers are advised to avoid this roadway.” No idea for how long but might affect folks’ travel plans. That’s a big closure.

There goes my plans for tomorrow. Been a year for mountain access. Also promising that there seems to be some substantial rain up there on those fires!

Ugh it's just one thing after another this summer. I saw there was a forecast for heavy rain up there today. I'm really glad I didn't go through with my plan to camp at Wing Lake. Going down to I-90 would be a longgg detour. Hopefully they can get it fixed before Larch season starts.

Makes sense, that's probably where everything burned last summer. NWAC telemetry sites show 0.04 inches of precip at WA Pass, and 0.70 inches at Mazama in the past day.

Talked to a friend who tried to drive west on Hwy 20 this evening. Besides the slide, where he got turned around, it sounded like there were at least 2 other locations, below - east - where there was additional washing out of the road/pavement.

I've been told the main slide is between Lone Fir and Klipchuck campgrounds and there are minor washouts to the east of there as well, and that WSDOT hopes to have it fixed before the weekend. We'll see if that happens or not.

Well I hope they open it by this weekend. Sure wished they had the same attitude towards work on highway 2. My friend on WSDOT says there is alot of screwing off going on there.

I posted it before but once the fall rains really start I'm betting Hwy 2 is going to see steady closures due to mudslides like those pictured above.

Hmmmm. Might be a good time to head to Winthrop.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

More info here. https://www.facebook.com/groups/okanoganfirealertinfo/posts/1022856871730439 Yes it is near Clipchuck. Unofficial info from the poster "UPDATE 8:03 a.m.: They hope is to have SR 20 reopened by Thursday evening. That is just a goal, it is not a promise. We will have more updates as we get more information."
