They might have some trouble finding volunteers for building a lookout in which they'll basically never be allowed inside.
The public is welcomed inside to visit when the lookout is staffed, but unfortunately, not able to do that for the past two years due to COVID and now this year due to roof issues. Hopefully if we can get the roof fixed, we'll reopen for ops and visits next summer.
In the meantime, Kelly Butte and Suntop are staffed this summer (most days at least) and open to the public to visit.
Or do you mean that the public should just be able to go in anytime? The sad truth is that most lookouts when they go that route, end up vandalized pretty quickly and USFS has to remove items like the Osborne Fire Finder, etc. A few are open to the public staying (Three Fingers, Hidden), but with limits and they still suffer vandalism. So we (SFLA) are of the opinion that it's better to staff them up with volunteers (and ANYONE can sign up to volunteer) and then make them open to the public to come see the inside of the lookouts while preserving them for the future.
