The latest endurance feat by Kaytlyn Gerbin and Jenny Abegg
Quote:
Gerbin envisioned linking up the previously established North Cascade high routes — the Redoubt-Whatcom High Route, North and South Pickets, Isolation Traverse, and Ptarmigan Traverse — to create a unique traverse of the North Cascades. ... From sunup to sundown, over six days, 19 hours and 38 minutes, Gerbin and Abegg covered 123.6 miles and climbed 58,850 feet, becoming the first people on record to traverse the North Cascades High Route in this manner in so little time.

Couldn't get past the paywall but I'm assuming Jenny is related to Steph?

I read the article in The Seattle Times and really enjoyed it. Good on Kaytlyn Gerbin and Jenny Abegg! From the article: "From sunup to sundown, over six days, 19 hours and 38 minutes, Gerbin and Abegg covered 123.6 miles and climbed 58,850 feet, becoming the first people on record to traverse the North Cascades High Route in this manner in so little time." "The feat may seem extreme, but in Washington, there’s always another adventurer looking to test that FKT." Rumi

That sums it up for me too. wink.gif It's seemingly unbelievable. I loved the video. I can't imagine bushwhacking in shorts, but they appear to be unscathed and unfazed by any of the challenges. ~z

up.gif In my next lifetime? Maybe. Incredible. Pretty impressed by their calm, humble, poise and competence. Which may have a lot to do with their ability to do that route so nimbly.

How is this inspiring, exactly? Did it involve technical climbing?

From the Seattle Times article: "From sunup to sundown, over six days, 19 hours and 38 minutes, Gerbin and Abegg covered 123.6 miles and climbed 58,850 feet, becoming the first people on record to traverse the North Cascades High Route in this manner in so little time. Uncertain which mode to set their watches at the start — this wasn’t exactly running nor mountaineering — the adventurers ultimately decided on “trail running,” though they ultimately ran infrequently. Gerbin and Abegg landed on calling this “ultraneering,” a cross between ultrarunning and mountaineering." Different things inspire different folks. Maybe you just aren't impressed and that's OK. I know I am impressed. And that inspires me to look for ways to stretch myself and do the things I want to do while I still can. Rumi

People with ultra high metabolisms have no choice and must hike in all terrains with minimal clothing else we will overheat and die of heat stroke! Jenny I am sure has this same trait. The occational scratch on the legs is far less uncomfortable then getting drenched in sweat under pants, requiring me to carry more water and wear out faster. This feat is amazing and the video was very well done. It would be super fun to do this route (at a normal pace haha) to reminisce on all my past trips into the N Cascades.

The Pacific coast to the Great Plains = my playground!!! SummitPost Profile See my website at: http://www.lemkeclimbs.com

Took us 6 days to back in the day just do the northern pickets, of course we did more climbs.

Is this even a serious question? Does something have to involve technical climbing to be inspiring? They covered a lot of distance in a short time, through tough terrain, and saw much of the best of what Washington has to offer.
