I recently saw this on an off trail camping site in the Stevens pass area... It looks like it's about 100 years old, any body know what this would have been used for? Heavy, must have been mule packed in, am guessing Cheers

Maybe horseshoeing. Wonder if shod critters were used to pull logs

an old forge. Champion Blower & Forge was one of the big manufacturers. Those were hot-selling items from about 1880 to 1920. up.gif

lots of things were worked on forges, using borax and a hot enough forge you could weld steel together mold chain links together, rework axe heads,,,,

Try vintagemachinery.org and you'll probably find information on forge manufacturers there if you were wanting to identify it or find out more about it.

Could be mining. I've seen similar ones, although not in that good of shape at mine sites.

My Grandpa was a blacksmith. There was one of those rusting away at the last place they lived. Those things will provide lots of entertainment for kids if the parts still move.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Are there old mines in the area? Heating bits, then hammer sharpening was part of the job. Then they’d temper them. For both a forge was needed. Hey, the posting problem seems resolved. Thanks.

even on a logging operation, a blacksmith would come in handy. those units were designed to be somewhat "portable". doesn't come to me as any surprise at all that it was found in the woods, considering the photos I see posted by guys who live in the SE US on another site. binders, chokers, chains, whiffletrees ... all that stuff needs fixin' now and then. haha! you had to look that up, didn't you? lol.gif

There are quite a few on US2. Discovering Washington's Historic Mines has some info. A number of years ago I put several mineral surveys on line here - https://app.box.com/s/syg47zjgqu .

Dad talked of sharpening bits, then tempering. All by eye, and judgement. The tip first into the liquid, a pause, then after that made hardest, the bit pushed in a little more to harden somewhat the piece just a little behind the tip.
