But no brains to know the difference between a dog and wolf. Of course both are illegal to shoot. This kid was 20 and thought what he saw was a wild animal. So he shot. Without actually seeing what it was. MORON ! When someone ( and I've seen females packing as well ) has a gun. They just want to find any excuse to use it.

The story of what happened is not especially plausible. There was a long Reddit thread about this recently. The dog (which was a 4 mo old puppy) was noted to have "multiple puncture wounds," which were likely gunshot wounds. The idea that this kid shoots a single shot from far enough away to not see it's a person and manages to kill the guy and the puppy at once is a bit far fetched. This also happened back in August and there has been no movement on it until now (the article even notes a family member contacted the authorities the next day) - the suspicion is that the kid has family in law enforcement or another powerful position that's been roadblocking progress on this. We'll have to see how it plays out.

It's Lewis County. A different world. I do not recognize the names of the shooters, so will assume they were not from East Lewis County. East Lewis County is even more of a different world than the rest of it--since law enforcement can't or won't work there, local residents quietly take matters into their own hands, but this does not sound like that is the case. That one shot killed both would be unusual, but not impossible. Most East Lewis Countian natives are quite responsible with firearms. Kids learn young--are out hunting, and realize the damage a shot can do --Not a video game. Stay tuned, I guess.

Where exactly did this happen? The article says he was killed on the 101 trail (which heads east from Walupt to the PCT) but then it says he was hiking to Sheep Lake. This story is odd. Poor guy and poor puppy :-(

I don't really buy the story and it doesn't sound like the police are either. I don't think they would charge him if they did. They probably suspect much worse but this is the charge they think will stick.
