Still on track for a 2023 opening, 17 years after it washed out.
16 years was the estimated guess by the first USFS staff in Skykomish that I talked to the week after the washout.
I laughed.
16 years later, here we are. 2022 wrap-up and update

As frustrating as the long delay was and as grumpy as that made me, I am beyond all that now and overjoyed that the repair is happening.
Working through the approval/funding/execution phases of repairs in Index taught me that similar delays are common place. While I understand the laws and processes that caused that I think it can also be fairly stated that those laws and processes cause repairs to be vastly more expensive than if the process were simpler and of course in the end the public pays the bill. In cases where repair of flood damage has been clearly indicated without delay, we (the town) proceeded using our own funds and then endured the delay for reimbursement. Had we’ve been forced instead to delay the work until funding was approved the compound risk from subsequent flooding would’ve been many fold.

Bruce how many times have you snuck in past the area closure signs? I am guessing at least a dozen.

I have pretty much behaved myself and respected the closure. Little mixes worse than the combination of heavy equipment operation and pedestrian traffic...good formula for sad endings there.
On the other hand a closure to foot traffic outside the contractor's operating season makes little sense, but that is the way of the world I guess.

Its a good thing that the USFS wasn't more involved in the planning or nothing would have been done.

Whatever else might be said, pro or con, about the USFS it must be recognized that they are prisoners of NEPA, and further that NEPA, for whatever pro or con one might feel about it, sucks vast amounts of time and money from all it touches.
Witness if you will the number of absolutely pissant repairs that go undone because of this, and because the FS budget has been gutted...proving I guess, your point.

I was staying in a cabin about 1/2 mile up the Index Galena road. They were going by that.
